The infectious agents causing CJD, scrapie and BSE remain incompletely characterized. Mounting evidence shows that the PrP protein alone cannot be the infectiuos agent, and belief in prions can undermine realistic assessments of infection. Direct analyses show the infectious particle size has the characteristics of a virus, in terms of both particle size and nucleic acid content. A classic vaccination approach suggests that the immune system may be recruited to limited agent spread
