Effect of photosynthetic potential on spike length and spike mass of wheat

In a nutrient experiment set up on Ramann's brown forest soil in Keszthely (Hungary) in 1994, studies were made on the effect of the size of the photosynthetic potential on spike length and spike mass. The nitrogen treatments were 87, 174 and 261 kg/ha and the phosphorus treatments were 60 and 120 kg/ha. The examination showed that the nutrient supplies had a significant influence on the value of photosynthetic potential. At all measuring dates there was a close positive correlation between photosynthetic potential and spike length, which could be described with a quadratic function (y=a+bx+cx2). This correlation was closer (r=0.9186) at the beginning of development than at the end of the measurement period (r=0.8132), which indicates that spike length is determined by the foliage area at the beginning of development. The correlation between photosynthetic potential and spike mass became closer towards the end of the vegetation period. The r values of the y=a+bx+cx2 functions varied between 0.8691 and 0.9294.
