Effect of ammonium sulfate (AS) application on yield, fruit quality, and leaf N content of four years old "Starkrimson" apple trees on M26 rootstock was studied for three consecutive years under rainfed conditions with supplemental irrigation. N fertilizer at rates of 500, 1000, 2000 g ammonium sulphate was applied early season (February), or as equal split application of the same rates (250 x 2; 500 x 2; 1000 x 2) early season (Feb.), and shortly after fruit set (April). Addition of N increased the fruit yield significantly over the control. The highest yield was obtained at a rate of 1000 g (AS)/ tree in two equal split applications. Neither early application of higher N rates nor late split application had affected the yield, reflecting low N utilization under such conditions. Nitrogen additions had no significant effect on average fruit weight, firmness, TSS, and TA. Leaf N content increased significantly by N application in both, first and second seasons. Highest N concentration was 3.4 and 3.69%, respectively at 1 x 500 g AS/tree.
