The purpose of this report is to consider the economic characteristics of environmental conservation agriculture through two case studies. The subjects of our investigation include rice farming using ducks in Ogaki city, Gifu Pref. and compost plants of JA Ena-Kita. Our major findings follow. (1) Subsidies in the assistance programs of Ogaki city and Ja Ogaki account for 22% of the costs of product. (2) The problems of rice farming could be solved by technological improvements to achieve shorter working hours; adequate compensation to the producers through improvements such as co-op; continuation of the assistance programs; etc. (3) Rather than operating income covering the depreciation cost of plants and the labor cost of full staffs of the Ja, it largely exceeds the income. (4) The problems of the plants might be solved by continuing the assistance programs once the plants are rebuilt; the production of superior compost and the findings of new markets; the reduction of the labor cost of full staffs; etc
