The most important animal health problems in Latvia in the period from 1990 to 1997 were caused by hog cholera, rabies, enzotic bovine leukosis, enterovirus encephalomyelitis. Statistics on hog cholera situation are given since 1973 and on enterovirus encephalomyelitis since 1979. Hog cholera is the only one disease from the OIE List A which affected Latvia in this period. Due to hog cholera outbreaks form March 1996 immunization of swine population is carried out. The last two outbreaks in 1996 are connected with wild boars as reservoirs of infection.
