Pastures as a source of forage in Latvia

Although the agrometeorological conditions in Latvia are favourable for grassland farming, the development of cultivated pastures was started only in the 1920-ies. The scientific research on pasture cultivation carried out by Latvian scientists resulted in proper systems of cultivated pastures. The present situation concerning grass yields from cultivated pastures, the chemical composition of forage grasses and the consumtion of forage by Latvian Brown cows are analysed. It is stated that under the conditions of free economic market the unexpensive pasture grass is the basis for cheap milk, beef and mutton production.
