Influence of shade on the photosynthesis and yield of sweet potato

A sweet potato trial under artificial shade was set-up at IPB [Institute of Plant Breeding] Experimental Station. Thirty-cm cuttings of IPB variety UPL-Sp-5 were sown under different types of shading, namely: shade Level 0 (open, 0 percent light reduction), shade Level 1 (40 percent reduction), shade Level 2 (60 percent reduction) and shade Level 3 (80 percent reduction) to study the influence of shade on growth, leaf gas exchanges, yield and other agronomic and physiological traits of sweet potato. Shading significantly reduced plant dry weights, the number of secondary vines, average internode distances of secondary vines and weight and number of marketable roots. Reduced light intensities also led to increased plant moisture, increased lengths of both secondary and main vines, more nodes and bigger internode distances in the main vine. The light response curve showed that the photosynthetic characteristics for sweet potato were not modified by the light conditions under which the plants were grown
