Growth and yield performance of cotton (var. CRDN 174) as influenced by nitrogen levels and hill spacing

The study determined the growth and yield response of CRDN 174 to increasing levels of nitrogen (N) and different hill spacing. It was conducted at the Cotton Research and Development Institute research farm at San Juan, Ilocos Sur [Philippines] from September 1995 to March 1996. The experiment involved two factors: hill spacing (30, 40, 50 cm) as factor A and N levels (0, 60, 120, 240, 360 kg N/ha) as factor B. It was laid out in split plot design with three replications. The number of bolls per plant significantly increased when hill spacing was 50 cm. Cotton plants applied with 360 kg N/ha produced the highest seedcotton yield of 1581.2 kg/ha although almost similar to plants applied with 240 and 120 kg N/ha. The yield maximizing level of N was 265 kg N/ha with a seedcotton yield of 1669.48 kg/ha. The predicted optimum level of N was 258 kg N/ha which was associated with a seedcotton yield of 1668.56 kg/ha. Closer spaced plants has the highest N uptake but observed insignificant. Plants applied with 360 kg N/ha significantly obtained the highest nitrogen uptake
