Effects of varying light intensities on characters associated with yield performance of peanut (Arachis hypogaea) in Japan

Six peanut cultivars composed of 3 Philippine seedboard varieties (UPLPn2, UPLPn8, E.G. Red) and a promising line (IPBPn 82-25) and 2 Japanese improved cultivars (Nakateyutaka and Tachimasari) were grown under full sunlight, 40 percent and 63 percent light reductions at the Chiba Agricultural Experiment Station at Tokyo, Japan from May-October, 1994. The objectives were twofold: 1.) to evaluate the performance of promising Philippine shade tolerant materials and Japanese cultivars under 3 light levels in Japan, and 2.) to determine statistical relationships among agronomic traits at different light intensities. Shading reduced pod number and total dry matter production (TDMP) which led to the significant reduction in pod and seed yields. Plant height, on the other hand, was significantly increased under shade. Seed size, shelling percentage and relative chlorophyll content (RCC) were not statistically different at the varying light intensities. The Japanese cultivars showed tolerance to shading as manifested by shorter plants and higher yield. UPLPn 8, a Philippine shade tolerant cultivar, had comparable pod yield with Tachimasari. Plant height was negatively correlated with peanut yield while pod number and seed size were positively correlated with yield in the three light intensities. Dry matter production was negatively correlated with yield in the full sunlight (0 percent shade) and 43 percent shade but not under 63 percent shade. Peanut yield potential was affected significantly by the genotype of the cultivar used and by the levels of shade. Peanut genotypes exhibited compensatory responses for yield and other yield components
