Pilot testing of the integrated pest management of diamondback moth in the Ilocos [Philippines]

The integrated pest management of diamondback moth using parasitoid Cotesia plutellae supplemented with spray of microbial/selective insecticides based on economic threshold level was piloted and evaluated in the lowland areas of Ilocos Sur from Nov 1994 to April 1995. The performance of the IPM technology was determined by comparing the yield, cost of production of cabbage and benefit cost ratio (B/C) between the IPM and Farmer Control Practice (FCP). With IPM technology, the B/C ratio were higher in all economic cooperators as a result of reduced insecticide and labor cost in insecticide application. The yield obtained from the IPM technology were comparable with the yield obtained from the FCP plots despite of only 2-4 spray of microbial or selective insecticides as compared to 24-36 times spraying under the FCP plots. In general, FCP plots showed lower number of DBM per 50 plants which was due to intensive application of insecticides. Establishment of Cotesia was rapid in demonstration sites where Cotesia were released continuously throughout the cropping duration.
