Recommended fruit species for highland production

Thirty six fruit species representing 24 genera and 15 families from various accredited sources both local and foreign were evaluated at the Baguio National Crop Research and Development Center, Bureau of Plant Industry, Baguio City [Philippines] and different locations in the Cordillera. Among the different fruit species evaluated; macadamia, pear, peach, apples and some cultivars of citrus and lychee were found adopted under local conditions. Macadamia clone no. 6 was the most promising in kernel quality. Pear cultivar Taiwan Hybrid is recommended because of its superior fruit quality comparable to Japanese Sand, a variety commercialy grown in the region. On peach, cultivars Santos (check cv.), Earligrande, Taiwan peach, Earliamber and Flordasum were found promising based on yield and fruit quality. Out of the 23 apple cultivars evaluated, Anna, Rome Beauty and Dorsette Golden performed better. However, due to the many problems in apple production coupled with very short freezing temperature during fruit development, this crop has not gained much acceptance. On lemons, cultivars Meyer and Verna are recommended being prolific and early bearer among the lemons tested. On lychee, Acc no. 28 and Sinco 2 are recommended for commercial production. These varieties have a bigger and sweeter fruits, small seeds which are comparable to the imported lychees. Mauritius, an imported cultivar is recommended for areas of 1000 to 1400 meters above sea level
