Evaluation of antimicrobial potential of some ferns of family Dennstaedtiaceae

The present investigation was carried out on the crude extracts of three fern species, Asplenium trichomans L. Cyrtomium macrophyllum (Makino) Tagaw and Diplazium esculentum (Retz.) Sw., to evaluate their antimicrobial activity against five different microbes including two gram positive bacteria, two gram negative bacteria and a fungus species. The study involved the separation of the crude extracts of powdered rhizom, leaves and spores in solvents of wide polarity such as petroleum ether, chloroform and methanol. The physico-chemical screening of the crude extracts was also made to find out percentage yield of the polar, intermediately polar and the non-polar compounds. The results indicated that on the whole all the three extracts of leaves of A. trichomans were possessing highest antimicrobial activity. Among the three extracts, petroleum ether extract was found to be the most active against majority of the microbes. The gram positive bacteria were found to be more susceptible than the gram negative bacteria and the fungus in almost all the cases.
