Corn + cowpea intercropping system

A study was conducted at NOMIARC for CY [crop year] 1991-1992. The study involved planting corn at varying distances of planting intercropped with cowpea. Population per hectare of corn would not be less than 45,000 hills since it is corn-based. There were five treatments for 1991 and six for 1992. IPB Var 1 of corn and IT 82D 889 of cowpea were the varieties used. Results revealed that as to complementation effect, the closer roots of intercrop legume (T5 and T6 within row intercropping), the higher yield of corn was obtained compared to monoculture corn production. Economic analysis showed that highest average net benefit (four croppings) was obtained by T4 (50,000 pop/ha corn) of P9,726 followed by T3 (47,058 pop/ha corn) of P7,341. However, based on net return per peso invested, T4 is recommended for both wet and dry season planting with season mean marginal rate of return of P12.97
