Effect of different substrates on the simultaneous production of beta glucosidase and polysaccharides by Aspergillus niger NIAB 280

It was found that untreated kallar grass induced maximum beta -glucosidase specific activity (3.7 units/mg protein) when Aspergillus niger NIAB 280 was grown in fermenter, while minimum specific activity (0.09 units/mg protein) was obtained in the presence of Sigmacell-cellulose in shake flask apart from glucose which produced negligible amount of beta-glucosidase as well as extracellular proteins. The maximum production of polysaccharides (0.26 mg/mg freeze dried powder) was obtained when A. niger was grown in the presence of steam and alkali treated kallar grass in fermenter, while minimum polysaccharides (0.05 mg/mg freeze dried powder) were produced in the presence of glucose and mixture of untreated kallar grass and wheat bran in shake flasks. Pre-treated kallar grass induced 8.4 and 10.5 folds less beta-glucosidase specific activity than untreated kallar grass in shake flasks and fermenter respectively.
