Sweetpotato feathery mottle virus: its association with "Kamote Kulot" and its effect on sweetpotato yield

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and graft transmission were used to detect sweetpotato feathery mottle virus (SPFMV) in Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. on both symptomatic amd symptomless samples of sweetpotato collected from the field. Using ELISA, SPFMV was detected in the leaf extracts of about 33 percent, 53 percent, 67 percent, 71 percent, and 82 percent of the total samples from the provinces of Albay, Tarlac, Laguna, Pampanga, and Zambales, respectively. Grafting of the symptomatic and ELISA-positive samples on to stocks of I. setosa Ker. resulted in the development of vein clearing on leaves 22 days after grafting. Sweetpotato feathery mottle virus significantly affected the yield of sweetpotato. Root yield losses of 98.10 percent, 97.28 percent, 95.83 percent, and 84.55 percent were incurred on cultivar UPL-SP5, UPL-SP2, UPL-SP1 and Campbell, respectively. Reduction in the number of storage root was 50 percent in cultivars UPL-SP1 and Campbell while 66.67 percent in UPL-SP2 and 80 percent in UPL-SP2. The virus reduced sweetpotato top weight by 92.0 percent, 85.4 percent, 86.3 percent, 83.5 percent in UPL-SP5, UPL-SP2, UPL-SP5, and Campbell, respectively
