Screening of breeding lines, hybrids and open-pollinated varieties of corn for resistance to Philippine corn downy mildew

For 1995, a total of four trials were conducted to screen 82 corn entries for resistance to downy mildew (DM) infection caused by Peronosclerospora philippinensis (Weston) Shaw. These entries from the CIMMYT corn germplasm exhibited variable reactions to downy mildew disease. Plants affected early by the disease succumed within a month and those that survived bore unproductive ears. Findings revealed that 9.76 percent were found resistant to DM infection. Moreover, 53.66 percent were found intermediate and 36.59 percent were found susceptible. Furthermore, USM open-pollinated varieties like USM var 1, 3, 5, and 7 were also found resistant whereas USM var 8 and 10 were found intermediate, and USM var 6 susceptible, respectively.
