The aim of the present study was to take full advantage of the availability of trisomic plants to study the genetic linkage among morphological and molecular markers to enlarge the genetic map of Vicia faba. Seven F2 families of faba bean descendent from trisomic plants for chromosomes 3, 4, 5 and 6 were analysed for isozyme markers and two of them were also studied for morphological, RAPD and physical localised reserve protein gene markers. This combined approach proved to be useful to integrate the physical and genetic map of the species. The inheritance of 10 isoenzyme loci has been studied, 3 of which are described for the first time in faba bean. Linkage analysis revealed 14 linkage groups, 8 of which have been precisely assigned to specific chromosomes. The comparison of the results from Vicia faba with the maps of related species (Pisum sativum L., Lens culinaris L. and Cicer arietinum L.) revealed one new possible case of linkage conservation. It was also possible to identify several QTLs for the quantitative trait seed weight, the most important of which located on chromosome 6, could explain approximately 30 per cent of the total phenotypic variation. Finally, a composite linkage analysis with partially overlapping sets of informative genetic markers from the data of a previous work and our data, revealed 13 linkage groups, reducing the number of markers and/or linkage groups not yet assigned in the map of the species.
