Evaluation of Ethiopian barley landraces for disease and agronomic characters

To study the variation within Ethiopian landraces for disease resistance and agronomic characters, 180 accessions from the Plant Genetic Resources Center of Ethiopia were taken to represent material collected in the regions around Holetta, Sheno and Bekoji. The material was assessed on research stations at the same three locations. Disease was encouraged by the use of a susceptible cultivar (Ardu 12-8C) at all sites, and by distributing infected crop debris (at Holetta only). Scald (Rhynchosporium secalis) was prevalent at all three locations, while net blotch (pyrenophora teres Drechs. [=Drechslera teres (Sacc.) Shoem.]) was important at Bekoji and also present in Holetta. Sixty lines resistant or moderately resistant to both diseases, from each collection site, were selected and placed in agronomic trials. Great variation was evident in days to heading, days to maturity and plant height, showing the possibility for selecting pure lines adapted to each specific environment
