Effect of nitrogen fertilizer dose and time of application on the growth and yield of four sorghum hybrids [Sudan]

Field experiments were conducted at Gezira Research Station (G.R.S), Wad Medani, Sudan in 1993 and 1994 seasons to investigate the effect of nitrogen fertilizer dose and time of application on four hybrids of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench). Four levels of nitrogen fertilizer (urea) were used (0, 43, 86 and 129 kgN/ha), applied at sowing or 30 days after sowing (DAS). The growth parameters measured were, plant height, number of leaves/plant, leaf area index, leaf nitrogen percentage and plant dry weight. The yield components and yield investigated were, the number of heads/ha, number of grains/head, 1000-seed weight, seed protein and yield (tons/ha). The results showed that leaf area index (L.A.I) and 1000-seed weight were significantly affected by hybrids in both seasons, while the plant height and the number of heads/ha were significantly affected in the first season only. Nitrogen dose affected significantly plant dry weight, leaf nitrogen percentage, leaf area index, number of heads/ha, number of seeds/head and grain yield in both seasons, while the number of leaves/plant and plant height were significantly affected in the first season. The effect of nitrogen dose on 1000-seed weight and grain protein content was significant in the second season. Applying the fertilizer at sowing produced significant effect on plant height and plant dry matter weight in the first season, while delaying the fertilizer application to 30 DAS produced significantly higher L.A.I. The time of nitrogen application had no significant effect on yield components and final grain yield.
