Studies on bacteria associated with ophthalmic infection in domestic animals in Sudan [Sudan]

In this study, surveys for the prevalence of abscess disease were carried out at sheep collection areas including ElKadaro veterinary quarantine, Abuzaid animal market, Elbaggair area and other locations in Khartoum State. One hundred isolates of Staphylococcus aureus subspecies anaerobius were tested biochemically for catalase, oxidase, coagulase, urease, nitrate, Voges-Proskauer, Methyl red, deoxyribonuclease and sugar fermentation. The best media for S.aureus subsp. anaerobius growth were determined. Pathogenicity testing of S .aureus subsp. anaerobius was performed experimentally in twelve desert lambs. Four vaccination trials, involving the use of different antigen preparations, were undertaken. Vaccine preparations included the whole formalinized culture, toxoid, soluble antigen, chloroform treated cells and the capsular antigen. Bacteriological surveys of the disease revealed a bimodal pattern of prevalence. Sheep in feedlots and export bound flocks had a high prevalence of abscesses namely 1100 out of 3000 (33.3), while sheep kept under backyard or extensive rearing conditions showed a prevalence of 5.1 (62 out of 1200). Abscesses involved different parts of the body but more commonly involved the head and neck region. The best media for growth of S. aureus subsp. anaerobius were found to be serum broth and brain heart infusion broth respectively. The disease was reproduced experimentally in desert lambs and the inoculated organism was isolated from experimentally produced abscesses. Results of controlled vaccination trials indicated that Morel's disease is a vaccinable disease; most efficiently with a vaccine composed of killed whole culture, capsular antigen and toxiod. A level of protection approaching 100 in experimental studies and similarly the same percentage in field experiments was achieved against the disease
