Effect of rhizobium inoculation and nitrogen fertilization, nitrogen fixation on yield of different chickpea cultivars [Sudan]

A field experiments was carried out for two consecutive seasons 1994/95 and 1995/96 at El-Rwakeeb Research Station to study the effect of Rhizobium inoculation and N fertilization on six chickpea cultivars. Plants were either inoculated with three Rhizobium strains separately, or N fertilized (50 kg N/ha). The results of the two seasons indicated the absence of infective strains for chickpea in the soil. Rhizobium inoculation or N fertilization significantly increased shoot and root weights, nodule and pod numbers and weights, shoot nitrogen content, yield, 100 seed weight and protein content of seeds. The results indicated that the three Rhizobium strains are infective and effective in nitrogen fixation. The results obtained from the inoculation were equivalent to to that of 50 kg N/ha. Inoculation with Rhizobium strain TAL 1148 had resulted in a signifieant increment in the most of the parameters studied. Variety Gabel marra was the beat variety in the most of the parameters studied. inochation increased yield by 60 and 42.5 wheras 50 kg N increased it by 58.6 and 74.3 in the first and second seasons, respectively
