Heavy metal and sulphur status in soils from selected regions of Poland

In most cases industrial contamination with heavy metals is associated with increased loads of other pollutants, e.g. SO2, NOX, F, and PAH. Sulphur deposition in Poland is of especially great concern since, in addition to a high local emission, about 50 % of sulphur is transported from outside the country, mainly from the southwest. The concentrations of sulphur and heavy metals in soils and plants in two different regions of the country, SW - mainly industrial, and NE - mainly agricultural, show a significant variation. The surface soils of the SW showed an S-SO4 content almost three times higher than in the NE, while this ratio for S-total is only a bit above one. The values of the SW/NE ratios for heavy metals varies from 3 (Zn) to above 7(Cd). These differences were much more pronounced in medium textured soils than in light sandy soils. Variable behaviour of metals in soils of these two regions is expected due to the simultaneous deposition of sulphur and metallic contaminants in the SW region
