The territory around the magnesite processing factories in Jelsava and Lubenik represent one of the most devastated areas in Slovakia. In the 1960s and 70s emissions amounted to 8000 tons of MgO per year, falling to 800 t in 1992, and a forecast level of 50-70 t per km in 1996. Soil pH and magnesium content increased, humus decreased, the natural balance of soil nutrients was broken and the nutrition of young plants was negatively influenced. With respect to the properties and ecological demands, the Austrian pine was considered to be one of the few tree species suitable for reforestation. Data are presented analysing mortality, health and growth of young stands, and development of rooting system. Results of other authors are referred, too
