To examine the habitat quality for hares and roe deer, the population densities of both species were assessed on both Austrian and Slovak sides of the flood plain of the river March (Morava). First results show that relatively high game densities can still be found in intensively cultivated agricultural landscapes as long as there are no large scale cultivation units with only one crop (monocultures). The aim of a count is to compare population densities in relation to different landscape structures and cultivation techniques. In order to avoid hunting of too many hares the Austrian side is making an effort to hunt only these animals according to their yearly increase. In the Slovak Republic the plan for shoooting is controlled by district offices. In case of roe deer a certain hunting quota is determined each year both in the Slovak Republic and in Austria which regulates how many deer should be shot
