The occurrence of cadmium in the food sector of Slovakia has been followed since 1986. Foodstuffs and food of animal and vegetable origin, soil inputs, irrigation, drinking water and feed have been monitored. Since 1991 cadmium has been one of the main contaminants tracked by the Partial Monitoring System, "Food and Animal Feed Contamination", which is part of overall Environmental Monitoring. The highest percentage of samples containing above-norm quantities of cadmium were found in animal feed in the eastern region of Slovakia
