Vegetative propagation of Platanus orientalis X P. occidentalis F1 hybrids by stem cuttings

Platanus acerifolia (AIT.) Willd. is one of the most common ornamental trees planted throughout the northern hemisphere. Better methods of propagating vegetatively selected individuals of Platanus acerifolia are required. The effects of genotype, cutting position on the donor plant, cutting diameter and auxin treatment were investigated (outdoors) on the cutting's rooting ability. Great variation in rooting was observed among the clones tested, some of which exhibited high rootability (90). Cutting position on the donor plant also proved to be a critical factor affecting rootability. Cuttings originating from the basal part of the donor plant rooted more readily than those from the upper part (0.86 and 0.68 respectively). The effect of cutting diameter as well as auxin treatment on rootability proved to be neutral, although in some cases the auxin effect seems to be negative. Indirect evaluation of the root system's quality by the subsequent growth of rooted cuttings showed that the root system formation seems to be positively affected by all the above factors tested
