512 S1 lines of early maturing maize population NSP871 were tested in yield trial and downy mildew disease nursery in 1989 early rainy season at Suwan Farm and NSWFCRC. Two sets of 16*16 simple lattice were used for the yield trial and only one replication of the experiments were evaluated for downy mildew disease resistance. Yield range of the 512 progenies average from 2 replications were 54-921 kg/rai with the average of 426 kg/rai. Average number of days to 50 % silking were 55 days. Average percentage of downy mildew infection were 42 % whereas spreader rows infection were 97 % . 36 S1 were selected and S2 seeds from resistant plants were recombined into maize population NSP871(S)C1F2 or NAC 923. The other maize population NSP871(S)C1F2 or NAC 916 were formed by using the remnant seeds of 38 selected lines. Three experimental varieties were developed by the recombination of 30 seleted lines (10 lines per one experimental varieties) and the S2 seeds of resistant plant were used for the recombination.
