Effects of various green manure on rice yield in irrigated areas

Three leguminous green manure crops viz. Sesbania rostrata, Vigna sinensis and Vigna radiata were studied their effects on wet season rice and soil properties' change at Chainat Rice Experiment Station during 1987-91. Green manure crops were planted and incorporated before planting wet season rice. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 4 replications of 20*40 m plots. The results showed that all leguminous green manure crops could increase rice yield 7-12 % more than a check plot (no green manure). Rice yield increased as the biomass of green manure crops increased. The rice yield after S. rostrata was maximum (740 kg/rai). The second was yield after V. sinensis (712 kg/rai). the rice yield after V. radiata was the third (706 kg/rai). Soil analyses of green manure plots showed higher organic matters, P, K and CEC than the check plot when compared with the initial experiment.
