Effects of organic waste materials on nitrogen and potassium nutrition in paddy soils

Effects of organic waste materials on nitrogen nutrition were investigated in Lop Buri calcareous paddy soil and Nakhon Pathom basic paddy soil. The organic waste materials examined were : Humus, glutamic acid motherliquor (GML) from two factories (GML1 and GML2) and chicken manure (Chm). Urea and (NH4)2SO4 chemical fertilizers, were also studied. The investigations were conducted in laboratory and pot experiments. Furthermore, the effects of waste materials on potassium nutrition in Roi Et, sandy paddy soil were studied. GML and Chm the organic waste materials were studied in comparsion with potassium chloride, a chemical fertilizer at the rate of 25, 50 and 75 ppm K2O. The investigation was carried out in laboratory experiment and pot experiment. GML singnificantly increased NH4+ - N content in Lop Buri soil similar to that of Nakhon Pathom soil. NH4+ - N content in Lop Buri soil and Nakhon Pathom soil amended with the waste materials decreased in the following order : GML Humus Chm. The effectiveness of GML (GML1 and GML2) in increasing the NH4+ - N content in the soil and grain yield of rice plant in Lop Buri and Nakhon Pathom soils was the same as that of (NH4)2SO4 but higher than that of urea. Growth, yield and total N uptake of rice plants grown in Lop Buri paddy soil amended with GML were higher than those of rice plants grown in these soil amended with Humus and Chm. The results obtained from Roi Et soil showed that Chm and GML significantly increased K+ content in the soil comparable to that with potassium chloride (KCl). Growth, yield and total K uptake of rice plants grown in Roi Et paddy soil amended with GML was higher than those of the rice plants grown in Roi Et soil amended with Chm and KCl.
