Research of data on pesticide residues in food: Rice

Supervised trials were carried out on the residue levels of pesticides on rice i.e, carbofuran, cartap, chlorfenvinphos, chlorpyifos, fenitrothion, malathion, monocrotophos and triazophos. Only rice treated with chlorpyrifos detected any residue, but well below the accepted level within the Codex MRL of 0.1 mg/kg. From 1984 to 1986, 720 samples of polished rice and rice in the husk from retail stores in 20 provinces, including rice for export, were analysed for carbofuran, cartap, chlorfenvinphos, chlorpyrifos, fenitrothion, malathion, monocrotophos, triazophos, carbaryl, BPMC, diazinon, dichlorvos, parathion-methyl, phenthoate, pirimiphos-methyl and phoxim. From which no residues were detected. Information was gathered by interviewing 229 farmers and 211 rice millers/exporters, on pest problems, pesticide application, fumigation and self-preventive measures. The pesticides most frequently used in the control of rice pests are carbofuran, parathion-methyl and monocrotophos, respectively, From the data available we can conclude that the Codex MRLs for rice, of carbofuran, cartap, chlorfenvinphos, chlorpyrifos and fenitrothion are acceptable from a consumer safety point of view and that farmers are able to continue working within these quidelines. It is therefore recommend that Thailand notify its aceptance of the Codex MRLs in any of the ways as specified by the Codex. From the findings of the domestic surveillance samples, Thai rice suffers no residue problems from the 16 pesticides studied in this project.
