Measurement of nitrogen fixation in some groundnut lines using N-15 isotope dilution technique

Groundnut lines differed in their nodulating capacities, growth and N2 fixation. The five top lines in nitrogen fixation were KK 60-3, A3-1-1 (BC164) (PI 268770), 42-G-105 (PI 269072), Va bunch sel 31 (PI 152131) and Congo red 4 (PI 269108) which fixed 695.08, 682.85, 663.28, 352.51 and 639.65 mg/plant, respectively. Correlations (r values) between different pairs of parameters measured were positive and were statistically significantly in most of the cases. The amount of N2 fixed per plant had the highest correlation value with total N content in the shoot (r=0.97* ) followed by shoot dry weight (r=74* ), % Ndfa (r=0.67* ), % N in shoot (0.61* ). nodule dry weight (0.60* ), root dry weight (r=0.46* ) and nodule number (r=0.45* ). It is therefore suggested that shoot dry weight can be used as a selection criterion for high nitrogen fixation in where is no well equipped laboratory. However shoot dry weight and other paramaters, especially total N in shoot, may also be used as selection crieria in a well equipped labolatory, since these parameters are easier and cheaper to determine than that of 15N technique.
