Combining ability of tetraploid pollinators and their influence on investigated production parameters of triploid hybrids of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris var. saccarifera). [A short version of master thesis]

Combining ability, mode of heritability of some quantitative traits of four tetraploid sugar beet pollinators (root yield, sugar content, total sugar yield, crystal sugar yield) as well as expression of heterosis in F1 generation were investigated. Positive effect of heterosis for all investigated traits appeared in most cases only in relation to better parent, which points out to poor agronomy combining abilities of investigated pollinators. Analysis of combining abilities showed that values of general combining ability (GCA) for tetraploid pollinators were not significant for all the observed traits for both years of investigation. The greatest positive values of special combining ability (SCA) for root yield and total sugar yield were obtained in cases when pollinators had negative values for general combining ability (GCA), but MS-lines positive and significant positive values for general combining ability (GCA).
