In this study, it was examined whether a beta-adrenergic receptor blockade evoked by propranolol interferes with the effects which oxytocin exerts on the structure of the rat adrenal cortex. Adult male rats were treated for 15 days with oxytocin, propranolol or their combination. The results indicate that prolonged administration of oxytocin may exert both inhibitory and stimulatory effects on the adrenal cortex depending on the functional status of the gland. They may also suggest an interaction between peptidermic and aminergic factors in the regulation of adrenocortical structure and function.
