Influence of three weeks long starvation on blood elements of obese patients

This investigation included 79 persons (70 female), who came for reducing of their body weight by therapeutic starvation during three weeks. Average age was 32.6+-7.2 years, and average body mass index was 40.50+-6.52 kg/square m. All pacients were clinically examined. Blood tension and body weight were measured daily. Pacients took 2-2.5 l of Yugoslav mineral water "Knjaz Milos" every day and from the fourth day multi-vitamin pills fortified with minerals (Oligovit or Oligogal-Se preparation). Alopurinol was given to the patients who had a rise of urat values. A mild laxative-bekunis pills were taken when needed. It was found that mean value of body weight loss was 13.48+-3.25 kg. The number of erythrocytes was not significantly decreased, as well as the number of trombocytes, leucocytes and the value of haemoglobin. Significant difference was noticed only in the values of haemocrit; the twenty first day value was diminished comparing to the one registered on the first day.
