The year 1997 was characterized by considerable yield losses in sunflower due to poor physical properties of the soils, unfavourable weather conditions, and a delay in basic tillage. When corn was used as the preceding crop, the yields were considerably reduced, mostly because of late basic tillage. Sunflower rotations of more than seven years gave more stable and significantly higher yields than those of less than three years. The same was true of autumn tillage relative to spring one. The addition of N fertilizer as well as the removal of the stubble and inter-row cultivation also produced significantly higher and more stable yields. NS-H-111 was the best and most widely used hybrid in 1997. Late basic tillage and sowing after the optimum sowing dates resulted in significantly lower yields.
