Investigations on some important indicators of regional distribution and efficiency of swine industrial production in the three geographical regions of Serbia [Yugoslavia]

The problem of swine population regional distribution in Serbia (Yugoslavia) has been investigated, that is, the number, the existing housing capacity and the distribution of industrial farms for raising swine with respect to capacity measured by the size of a breeding herd. The general characteristics of a population are a large herd of swine and pregnant gilts (1995), a great number of farms more or less based on industrial swine production, and all types of the size of farms (small, medium, large). From the aspect of regional distribution, the largest breeding herd is found in central Serbia, the greatest number of farms is situated in the northten part of the country (87), and as for the size the dominant farm housing capacity is up to 1000 breeding animals in a breeding herd of sows and pregnant gilts (around 72). The southern region of Serbia actually has very small potential available for swine and pig's meat production, which is associated with ethnic nad religious structure of human population. By the analysis of a large sample of breeding sows taken as a whole and per region, regional differences were found to be in agreement with farrowing capacity, duration of lactation, and the period of oestrous - new pregnancy, that is, the efficiency of farrowing and nursing of piglets. It should be pointed out that even under non-traditional conditions of southern Serbian province, swine can successfully be raised on the farms if certain prerequisites were adequately fulfilled.
