Some growth parameters of sesame as affected by tillage methods and nitrogen management after wetland rice

Sasame (Sesamum indicum L.) was established under tillage (one rotavation followed by three harrowings) and no-tillage (seeding was done in 10 cm X 15 cm furrows) soil condition after wetland rice in Tropaquept, silty clay loam soil in the Philippines. Two nitrogen rates (60 and 90 kg/ha) along with three different application methods (broadcast, surface band and furrow placement) for each rate were evaluated on the growth of sesame. Tillage had higher (14%-20%) plant height than height than no-tillage. Nitrogen rate did not affect plant height but furrow placement in general produced taleer plant. Tillage soil had 41% higher LAI at flowering and 21% at maturity. LAI was increased with N rates and furrow placement produced higher LAI than broadcast and surface band. Irrespective of tillage methods and nitrogen rates furrow placement of both 60 kg and 90 kg N/ha showed higher CGR.
