Breeding and popularizing of Tianyan series of polyploid sugarbeet varieties

Tianyan series of polyploid sugar beet varieties (Tianyan 301, 302, 303, etc.) gave a root yield 15/-20/ higher and sugar content 0.6/-1.0/ higher than that of local varieties. Recently, its growing area makes up 40/-50/ of the sugar beet area in China, thus it created great economic and social benefit. In the development of Tianyan series of polyploid varieties, some new ideas were brought forth in breeding technique, namely, to put the stress on the selection of tetraploid materials, which have high disease resistance, high sugar content and good combining ability, and to use these selected tetraploid materials as crossing parents. Its yield potential and adaptability was improved by strict directional selection in early generations, selection in disease region and evaluation at multi-locations, and by combining selection of individual tetraploid plants with artificial crossing, to form new lines and cross parents with multiple lines.
