Kinetics of induced peptidoglycan excretion from Brevibacterium divaricatum NRRL 2311 was investigated applying batch (BC), repeated fed batch (RFBC) and continuous (CC) cultivations. The emphasis was given to the study of the effect of cultivation conditions on physiological properties and morphology of microbial cells, specific growth rate and peptidoglycan production rate as well as on the production-growth relationship. Expected good correlation between specific growth rates and peptidoglycan yields was confirmed by BC, RFBC and CC experiments. Appropriate cell morphology and physiological state of B. divaricatum NRRL 2311 can be mantained by applying RFBC and CC with the appropriate feed rates (0.1-0.5 per hour). With respect to peptidoglycan production rate, both RFBC and CC showed to be much more efficient than corresponding BC.
