Nicotiana rustica var. brasilica can be used as a source of resistance to the pathogen causing wild fire of tobacco - race 1. The gene of N. longiflora, introduced in cv. Burley 21, which controls the resistance to wild fire - race 0, is not effective for race 1. Interspecific hybrids were developed between Nicotiana rustica var. brasilica and N. tabacum cultivars of oriental and large type. It was found that in F1 hybrids combining the characters of the two species, plant height and leaf number, which originate from N. tabacum, were inherited dominantly, as well as stem branching, a character from N. rustica. Resistance to the pathogen of wild fire race 1 was also diminant. The interspecific hybrids resistant to wild fire are of interest to breeding for immunity after their sterility is overcome by producing regenerants by tissue cultures.
