Somatic cell count is used as an indicator of milk quality and udder health. During all lactation months somatic cell count in milk from normal, healthy udder is 200 000 or less per ml. Student t-test proved difference between the groups of single half-sisters, which gave reason to estimate the heritability. The intraclass-correlation analysis of the groups of half-sisters indicated the heritability of somatic cell count in the first (square h=0.11), second (square h=0,16) and third (square h=0,23) lactation. In addition to heritability there are other factors that may affect somatic cell count. These are milking technique, milker, milking equipment, stage of lactation, lactation number etc. Overmilking had a rather significant effect on somatic cell count(P0.001). The lactation number appeared to be significant to somatic cell count in milk (P0.001)
