Cows from a specific Estonian dairy herd were used to determine the persistance of antibiotic residues in colostrum after dry cow therapy. Cows were treated in all quarters at drying off with antibiotics approved for the use for non-lactating cows. Colostrum samples were collected from each udder quarter of each cow at the first milking after parturition. Samples were detected for antibiotic residues by Delvotest SP. Fifteen of 82 colostrum samples were positive for residues. Every time when colostrum samples were analysed by Delvotest SP, one normal milk sample was included into the trial to avoid false positive results. The percentage of colostrum samples positive for antibiotic residues is quite high, which indicates the necessity to investigate the influence of dry cow therapy on the quality of colostrum, as well as on the marketable milk more carefully
