A considerable damage has been observed in the period 1994-1997 in sunflower, maize, coleseed, grapevine, white mustard and mainly in melons in different parts of the Department Tolna. The ants attacked mostly the young plants, by destroying the root neck and upper roots; the plants witheered and collapsed. In older sunflower stands the stalks were hollowed out and the flower buds destroyed. In most cases the damage was caused by the ant Tetramorium caespitum L., in melons or cantaloups there were mixed colonies of ants and the beetle Formicomimus pedestris Rossi. In grapevine also Prenolepis nitens Mayr and in coleseed also the ant Formica rufibarbis F. occurred. Small plot experiments were carried out in water melon in 1996 by using different attractants and insecticides. The preparations Fyfanon 50 EC, Danatox 50 EC, Force 5 EC, Prinex 48 EC were used in 0,15 resp. 20 g/ha in irrigation water, Regent 80 WG in a dosage of 13 g/ha. The effectivities were evaluated on the 2nd-14th day, based on the number of destroyed and intact plants. From among the attractants we found effective Hangya-Stop that has been placed on the soil surface among the plants prior to the appearance of ants and that gave a reliable forecasting of their attack. The irrigation with Prynex 48 EC and Fyfanon 50 EC yielded the best results, followed by Regent 80 WG, Force 5 EC and Danatox 50 EC. To destroy the ant's nests 20-24 cm deep in the soil quite high amounts of insecticide solutions (10 000-50 000 liter/ha) were neebed
