Results of agrochemical investigation of soil in agricultural farms in Latvia

SSPE "Raziba" carried out agrochemical investigations on 8 489 different size farms in the area of 229 109 ha in the period of 1992-1998. An average sample represents the area of approximately 2 ha of agricultural land. Basic indexes of soil agrotechnical characteristics were tested in all soil samples - the organic matter content, soil acidity. The content of mobile phosphorus and potassium was determined. The content of exchangeable magnesium was tested beginning with 1996. The results of soil analyses show that the organic matter content is critical (below 1.6 %) in 9 % of agricultural land. About 1/5 part of investigated soils contain acids unfavourable for cultivation of crops, soil acidity (pHKCL) below 5.6 and a low mobile potassium content. 37 % of agricultural land area has low phosphorus content and 15 % - low content of magnesium. On the whole 39 % of agricultural land has a low level of cultivation.
