The leaf pigment content of two varieties of lettuce - L. sativa var. capitata and L. sativa var. secalina was investigated to determine the influence of covering. Plants were grown in open field, under glass and under polyethylene film. Content of chlorophyll and carotenoids was determined with spectrophotometric measurements of pigments in 96% ethanol extracts prepared at growth stages of seedleaf, first true leaf, head formation and serviceable stage. The highest chlorophyll content in both varieties was observed at the seedleaf stage. At the serviceable stage the highest chlorophyll content was determined in the open field grown species. There was no correlation between chlorophyll and carotinoides content. The highest content of carotenoids was observed at the head formation stage. At the serviceable stage the highest carotenoids content was determined in the leaves of L. sativa var. capitata grown under glass and under polyethylene film.
