Germplasm collection, evaluation and maintenance of spices and essential oil-bearing crops

Inspite of its potentials both for export and as import substitute, spices and essential oil-bearing crops are always left behind in terms of funding prioritization (research, development, extension and production). To spark awareness as to its economic importance, PICRI [Philippine Industrial Crops Research Inst.] has an ongoing study aimed to establish a gene bank to serve as a show window both to USM students (undergraduate/graduate) and other interested individuals and agencies; to identify promising varieties and suitable rapid propagation techniques and to produce cheap propagated planting materials for both farmers and researchers as well as future expansion at PICRI. Linkages with DA (Region 11, 12), BPI (Bago-Oshiro, La Carlota City), Dept. of Horticulture (CA-USM, UPLB), CMU, UP-La Granja, PCA (Aroman) and private individuals (BMPV 2, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato, Kilagasan and New Visayas, Matanao, Davao del Sur), were established then followed by collection. Twelve spices collected were annatto, black pepper, chillies, cinnamon, garlic, ginger, langkawas, laurel, onion, oregano, turmeric and vanilla. Japanese mint, patchouli, pandan, peppermint, roses, sampaguita, sweet basil and vetiver. These are properly labelled, continuously propagated, planted and maintained at PICRI Gene Bank.
