Findings of the study showed: (1) the mean root length shoot numbers and shoot length of onions grown on five test waters were significantly different from that of the control; (2) Among series of onions grown in water samples from different sampling sites, the shortest root, shortest shoot and reduced number of shoots occur in the sample where the pollutants were most toxic. In addition, root tips of these samples showed tendencies of malformations like bending and swelling; (3) Stickiness, bridges and fragments and c-mitosis were the most common responses to various toxic substances causing mitotic disturbances and even death. The mean percentages of mitotic indices significantly decreased as the degree of abnormality in the mitotic process was increased; (4) The mean percentage of mitotic indices significantly decreased as the degree of abnormality in the mitotic process was increased; (5) Evaluation based on the microscopic and macroscopic parameters point to H5, Sta. Cruz River near the mouth of Laguna de Bay, and H1, San Diego and Talaheng Rivers to be the most polluted sites; and (6) Apparently, no chromosomal aberrations were noted demonstrating that no appreciable amounts of toxic substances were present in the waters to cause mutagenecity
