People's crucial role in the conservation and promotion of indigenous edible fruits and nuts

In the past the task of plant germplasm conservation was relagated to government institutions such as departments and bureaus and agricultural state colleges and universities. It was only recently that the private sector was tapped to play an important role under the concept of on-farm germplasm conservation. Starting in 1987 a duplicate of the fruit and nut species collection of the Institute of Plant Breeding, UP Los Banos [College, Laguna, Philippines] was established at the RC Farm in Calauan, Laguna. Some 115 species have already been planted to date, 31 of which are endemic/indigenous to the Philippines. Future plant acquisition will emphasize indigenous species which were reported to number about 140. The Farms' crucial role as a duplicate botanical collection was recognized when recently a major part of the Institute's species collection orchard was converted into a wide road, in the process of construction bulldozing many valuable fruit tree species. The fruit species arboretum also serves as a source of delicious fruits and nutritious leafy vegetables. It also plays an important role in instruction, research and extension, the latter as an effective tool in promoting the conservation and utilization of useful fruit and nut species
