Capitulum explants, 5-7 mm in diameter, of the commonly grown orange and red varieties of Gerbera cultured in Murashige and Skoog-Hellers (MS-H) solid medium supplemented with 2 ppm BAP + 0.1 PPM IAA produced more number of shoots that eventually developed into plantlets. Individual clusters of plantlets which have 4-6 shoots and at least 3.5-4.0 mm long responded well 3-4 weeks after culture in rooting media. The regenerative ability of tissues treated with colchine decreased two weeks after treatment. Increase suppression was observed with increased concentration of the chemical. Cytological analysis showed indefinite patterns of cell organization. These cells however, are larger than the control. Techniques to reduce browning of the cultures of Gerbera were developed
