Status of endemic Philippine amphibian population

Sixty-seven species of Philippine amphibians are presented and categorized into: 1. widespread in the Philippines, primarily commensals of man (6 species); 2. Bornean or Oriental with varying Philippine ranges (20 or 22 species); and 3. endemic Philippine species (41 species). The 41 endemic species are further classified based on how their populations have responded to present environmental conditions. This paper emphasizes the potential of amphibians as biological indicators of environmental health, and the need to organize a group of researchers and field workers who will be trained on the identification of amphibians, familiarization of their ecology and appropriate techniques in monitoring amphibian populations. Trends in amphibian populations from ensuing monitoring activities will then serve as a basis for decision regarding the management of biologically-important areas
